India is located in southern Asia, surrounded by the the coastlines of Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, The Indian Ocean. Surrounding countries include: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan.
After gaining it's independence from Great Britain (UK) in 1947, India became a Republic in 1950.
The Republic of India (official name) encompasses the majority of the Indian subcontinent. The country's size is a little more than 1/3 the area of the United States.
India is the 7th largest country, and the 2nd most populated country in the world.
With English being the most important language, Hindi is the common language of 30% of the population. Other official languages spoken are: Bengali, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Kannada, Assamese, Sanskrit, Sindhi (all official), and Hindi/Urdu.
